A column designed to help
BOCES staff meet their colleagues and BOCES students,
and learn more about the varied work we do across our organization.
— meet CTE student Nolan Kehn
You could say Nolan Kehn’s chosen career has wheels, some really big
ones, some really fast ones and some found on pickup trucks.
A Guilderland H.S senior in Career & Tech’s Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Repair program who also enjoys working on his own vehicles, Nolan brought home first place at the SkillsUSA Regional Diesel Technician competition in March, outscoring his career and technical education peers from through the Capital District. In April 2010, he earned a State SkillsUSA championship in Action Skills for his presentation on how to tap and thread truck parts. And, as BOCES staff read this profile on April 15, Nolan will be wrapping up the 2011 state-level SkillsUSA diesel competition Syracuse. (Watch the BOCES website for details.)
What do you like most about being a student at Capital Region BOCES?
It’s fun, and you learn a lot. At Career & Tech, you learn about something you are interested in and like to do, and that makes you want to learn more.
what did you want to be when you "grew up?"
I’ve always been interested in diesel and automotive technology, and I’ve always liked to take apart and fix trucks and cars. Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Repair is my favorite class in school. My favorite academic class is math.
What would your fellow students be surprised to know about you?
Kids at Guilderland High School would be surprised that I’m building a 1970 Oldsmobile 442. But the students here (at Career & Tech) know me very well.
What activity do you most enjoy in your free time?
Working on my trucks and car. I have a 1986 Ford 350 diesel truck, a 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 gas-powered truck and the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 muscle car, which will be a show car.
What makes you laugh?
People doing stupid stuff, anywhere, including in class, where there can be a lot to laugh about.
What is your favorite type of music?
If you had a million dollars to give to charity, which would you pick and why?
Something to help with cancer, since it’s affected my grandparents.
What are your top three items on your "bucket list?"
I'm 38...are you supposed to have a bucket list at this age????
Fill in the blank: A good day at BOCES is __________
When I know I've made someone else's job easier. For the most part I work with Facilities & Operations Directors who are overworked. If I can help to lighten their load, that's a day well spent for me.
Do you have a suggestion for who should be featured in an upcoming "I Am BOCES" column?
