BOCES
administrative budget reflects multi-year effort to
reduce costs
Next year's
budget includes additional "back-office" functions
focused on supporting districts in areas such as labor
relations and energy management
Capital Region BOCES' 2009-10 administrative
budget proposal reflects a multi-year effort to reduce
costs in current operations, health care,
equipment and supplies. The budget also accounts for the
development of additional "back-office" supports,
including negotiations, labor
relations and energy management.
The proposed
administrative budget of $7,042,814 is a 2.1 percent
spending increase over the current year. The increase represents an
average increase in assessment to component schools of
2.2 percent – less than 2.95 percent in the current
year.

Governor's Executive Budget calls for $698 million
reduction in school aid
On Dec. 16, Governor David Paterson presented a 2009-10
Executive Budget that calls for a $698 million (3.3 percent)
cut in education aid in 2009-10 from 2008-09 levels. The net
cut in aid for Capital Region BOCES' 23 component school
districts and the Albany City Schools would be nearly $30
million under the governor's proposal.
Responding to the governor's budget, Capital Region BOCES District
Superintendent Charles Dedrick said, "It is a difficult
budget for the difficult time we are in, and at Capital
Region BOCES we will do everything we can to assist
districts as they face challenges in the coming days and
months."
The governor has also proposed mandate relief measures to help
school districts manage proposed reductions including
exempting school districts from the Wicks Law requirements
for the next five years, delaying effective date of new
mandates to allow districts to build those costs into their
budgets and allowing districts to access certain reserve
funds. The Executive Budget is available online
here.
