New Visions: Law & Government
Students interested in current events, the
electoral process and politics, government and public policy, or the
world of law can explore related careers in New Visions: Law &
Government. Through this program, located
across the street from the Capitol, high school
seniors learn firsthand about the executive, legislative and
judicial branches of New York State government as well as about the
private legal sector.
Through different internships, students work with and shadow law and
government professionals at places such as the Attorney General's
office, the courts, the state Legislature and many different public
and private interest advocacy organizations. New Visions: Law &
Government students study a curriculum that integrates political
science, law, English and economics and includes units in
foundations of law, government and citizenship, criminal justice and
civial law, political philosophy, Constitutional law, campaigns,
elections and special interests, institutions of government, public
policy, and the legal profession.
Students' field experiences include attending trials, visiting a
maximum security prison, lobby, an overnight tip to Philadelphia and culminate in a weeklong trip to
Washington, D.C., where they meet with their state's senator and
Congressional representative and attend sessions of the United
States Supreme Court and Congress.
New Visions: Law & Government alumni have gone on to attend the nation's most competitive colleges and graduate schools, practice law, and serve in government, including as senior staff positions in both the State Assembly and the Senate, the New York State Court of Appeals (the state's highest court) and in the White House!
