After five years off-campus, Health Careers for Adults at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School is returning to the Albany campus at 1015 Watervliet Shaker Road.
The move stems from the need to accommodate an expanding program and the desire to create a central career pathway for adult students at the Albany campus. The goal, said Director of Career & Technical Education Terry Swett, is to revamp Building A at the Albany campus to be a “one-stop-shop” for adult students.
“We are creating a more cohesive Adult Education system, where adults come to one place,” said Swett. “We want our adult students to feel like this is their campus while they’re here.”
The decision was made this past May, after carefully considering the options of expanding at Health Careers for Adults’ location in the Rosewood Plaza, moving to another location off campus or returning to the CTE Albany campus.
“To me, this is the best possible outcome,” said Paula Negri, principal of Health Careers and Services. “There are so many opportunities available to health careers that we couldn’t do without expanding. And it’s great to come back and augment the career and tech school.”
Health Careers for Adults called the Albany CTE campus home until about five years ago, when enrollment in the programs was on the rise and it outgrew its space. With the elimination Alternative Education program recently, Adult Ed is able to use that space and bring its services under one roof.
“It’s great to come back home,” said Negri.
The move benefits CTE as a whole, said Swett, by preserving staff and consolidating services.
“We’re building this system of integrated adult enrollment, and merging the existing adult programs,” she said. “We’ll be able to use our financial aid office and bursar for multiple purposes, as opposed to only serving nursing students. Our financial aid office could then serve adult welding students, adult HVAC students and so on.”
The offices may have moved, but contact information for Adult Education remains the same:
