Grad profile: CTE taught collaboration, heavy equipment skills to this grad

CTE program: Commercial Construction/Heavy Equipment

Collaboration. It’s a key skill necessary for successful employment in almost every career field and it’s a skill taught in every class at Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School (CTE).

It’s also a skill Devin Garner credits CTE with teaching him, thus giving him an edge when he goes to Modern Welding School this fall and enters the workforce.

“I’ve learned to work with people I have no connection with and still get the job done well,” said Garner, a 2017 Middleburgh graduate and a graduate of the Commercial Construction/Heavy Equipment program on the Schoharie CTE campus.

Garner, who aspires to a career in construction and metal fabrication, credits CTE with preparing him well.

devin wood works“I have learned to operate equipment and be aware of those around me. I have also learned basic carpentry skills. … I have learned several skills and trades that have made me well-rounded and prepared me for a successful career,” Garner said.

Asked what he would tell others about the program, he said, “learning what I have will help them get ahead in life and I guarantee that they could find a job with the skills learned.”
