Area career and technical students give food, time to area food pantry

Donations benefit area's less fortunate

Students from the Albany CTE campus, as well as the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen, donated hundreds of food items to Concerned for the Hungry, Inc., a coalition that provides food to Schenectady County food pantries. After unloading their donations, about two dozen students — members of the SkillsUSA organization — then volunteered their time to sort the food into appropriate piles for pick-up by families.

“It’s a really good way to give back to your community and help the less fortunate,” Angel Ferrand, a CTE criminal justice student from Shenendehowa.

Working at the same table sorting cans and boxes of food was Lydia Marlett, a CTE electrical trades student from Guilderland.

“It feels really nice to help others who don’t have enough and to make sure they have a good holiday,” she said.

It is the second consecutive year the SkillsUSA organization at Capital Region BOCES CTE joined forces with other community volunteers to help the Concerned for the Hungry, Inc. as they sorted food at Keane Elementary School in Schenectady.Students work with Deb Toy

"It's very rewarding for us and for the students to give back, especially as we enter the holiday season," said CTE social worker and SkillsUSA advisor Debra Toy.
