Commissioner's Decision Keeps BOCES As Is
Search for new district superintendent will begin immediately

(October 5, 2007)

The Capital Region BOCES will not face reorganization or reassignment of any of its component districts, according to Commissioner of Education Richard Mills’ decision released on October 5, 2007.

BOCES had been awaiting a decision from the commissioner regarding the possible reassignment of four Schoharie County districts (Cobleskill-Richmondville, Middleburgh, Schoharie and Sharon Springs) from the Capital Region BOCES to the neighboring Otsego Northern Catskill (ONC) BOCES.

“This is good news and a confirmation of what we have known all along—that the Capital Region BOCES is a first-class organization providing quality, cost-effective programs and services for the students and staff in our component school districts,” said BOCES Chief Operating Officer Gerald Carozza.

Mills’ decision follows an extensive study of the BOCES conducted by the Rockefeller Institute, which had also recommended retaining the sole supervisory district of Albany, Schoharie, Schenectady and Saratoga Counties as currently constituted. [The full text of the report, released on July 31, is available on the SED Web site.]. By law, the State Education Department must complete a study of a BOCES whenever there is a vacancy in the Office of the District Superintendent.

With the release of Mills’ decision, the Capital Region BOCES Board of Education will immediately begin a search for a new district superintendent. The process is expected to take several months, with the new district superintendent taking office sometime later this school year.
