Silver appoints BOCES’
Nancy Jones to Advisory Council on Underage
Alcohol Consumption
(June 11, 2009)—Nancy Jones, School Improvement
Systems Analyst for Capital Region BOCES, has
been appointed by New York State Assembly
Speaker Sheldon Silver to serve on the Advisory
Council on Underage Alcohol Consumption. The
council consists of 21 members from all over the
state who are experts or stakeholders in the
effort to combat underage alcohol consumption.

Jones, a Niskayuna
resident, served as program manager for Capital
Region BOCES’
Comprehensive Approaches to Prevention
Intervention and Training (CAPIT) from 1996
until earlier this year when she transitioned
within BOCES to the position of School
Improvement Systems Analyst. As CAPIT manager,
Jones managed a comprehensive prevention program
for the Capital Region, coordinated
Schenectady’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth
Community Coalition, supervised and coordinated
Tobacco Control Policy grants for Department of
Health, managed Safe and Drug Free Schools
grants for Capital Region Schools and secured
funds through federal, state and local grants.
She also was responsible for data collection,
analysis, evaluation and communication of
results to key leaders. In addition to her
position with BOCES, Jones is an adjunct faculty
member of Schenectady County Community College’s
Human Services Department.
In Jones’ previous
work, she managed the Alcoholism and Substance
Abuse Council of Schenectady County’s Bureau of
Community Affairs from 1991 to 1996. Prior to
that, Jones served as director of community
education for Albany Citizen’s Council on
Alcoholism and Other Chemical Dependencies from
1990-1991.
Jones is currently
serving a second three year term (September
2010) as president of the Association of
Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers of New
York State. She is a board member and past
president, prevention chair and legislative
chair of the Coalition of Alcoholism and
Substance Abuse Programs of Northeastern New
York.
The Advisory
Council was established in 2007 to study and
evaluate the issue of underage drinking
consumption and provide recommendations to
decision-makers in order to implement effective
policies to curb the epidemic of underage
drinking in New York State. The Council is
responsible for submitting an annual report to
the Governor, the Majority Leader of the Senate
and Speaker of the Assembly regarding its
activities and recommendations.
