Basic Instructions

Individuals meeting these criteria are encouraged to apply:

arrow bulletSubstitute teachers need proof of associate's degree, bachelor's degree, license or certification, depending on the school district.

arrow bulletTeacher assistants need proof of high school diploma, a GED diploma, AAS diploma or a NYS Teaching Assistant Certificate, depending on the district.

arrow bulletNurses need an RN license and current CPR training.

arrow bulletAll applicants need:

bulletProof of identity and employment eligibility.

bulletThe ability to get along with adults and students.

bulletThe ability to follow direction and lesson plans.

bulletThe ability to employ classroom management for a safe, respectful environment.

bulletTransportation to schools.

bulletA touch tone telephone or access to the Internet.

 

Expectations for all substitutes:

arrow bulletDress appropriately.

arrow bulletFlexibility.

arrow bulletConfidentiality.

 

General district information:

General district information such as 2013-2014 pay rates and minimum requirements (PDF) and 2013-2014 district information, such as building start/end times (PDF).

 

To become a substitute teacher, nurse and/or teacher assistant, applicants need to:

arrow bulletDownload and complete all forms, which are to be brought to the interview appointment — no applications are accepted by mail.

arrow bulletNote, new security watermarks on transcripts are making it hard for districts to read them. (These background marks appear when we must copy the documents.) Consequently, if you're not teacher-certified, please bring your college diploma if possible.

arrow bulletSchedule an appointment. (Instructions for scheduling appointments.) Please be patient; it generally takes four to six weeks to get an appointment. Appointments will include:

bulletSystem orientation

arrow bulletSubstitute nurse applicants ONLY call (518) 464-3925 for an appointment.

arrow bulletNote: Teacher assistant substitutes are booked through our service for ten districts: Capital Region BOCES, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Cohoes, Duanesburg, Green Island, Niskayuna, North Colonie, Schalmont, South Colonie and Voorheesville. All other districts' teacher assistant subs are booked directly by the districts.

arrow bulletSubstitutes applying to work ONLY at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Tech School in Schoharie can complete the application process in Schoharie; call (518) 464-3956 to schedule an appointment. All non-Schoharie applicants, please follow the scheduling appointments directions.
