What is the Capital Region
BOCES Mentoring Program?
In cooperation with the
Albany-Schoharie-Schenectady-Saratoga BOCES and
Schenectady-Albany-Schoharie Faculty Association
Teachers’ Unit, a Mentoring Program was established in
June 2003. The purpose of the program is to provide
support for new teachers (as identified in the teacher
Unit Contract clause including Adult Education Teachers)
in order to ease the transition from teacher preparation
to practice, thereby increasing retention of teachers in
order to improve student achievement accordance with
learning standards.
Who is eligible for the
program?
The PDP Committee has identified two
levels of mentoring:
Level One is designed to assist a teacher who is
either new to the BOCES and who is in his/her first

Level Two is designed to assist a teacher who:
was an intern in Level One during the preceding year and
is not yet tenured; is not new to the BOCES but was not
an intern in the previous year; is new to the BOCES
regardless of the number of years of experience or
tenure awarded elsewhere; has changed positions within
BOCES; is a long-term teaching substitute for more than
90 days or is an uncertified long-term appointment.
What is the primary goal of
the program?
The goal of the program is to
provide support for new teachers in order to ease the
transition from teacher preparation to practice, thereby
increasing retention of teachers in the public schools,
and to increase the skills of new teachers in order to
